We humans are beautifully diverse, each having our own unique skin tone, ethnicity, culture, and story that makes us, well us! Although our ethnicities can have a direct effect on our skin behaviour, it is important to note that when it comes to skincare a “one size fits all” approach usually is not the most effective solution. Instead we need to tailor our skincare to fit our individual and unique needs.
Our skin tone is determined by a pigment called melanin which some of us have more and some of us have less, resulting in darker or fairer skin tones. We actually have two forms of melanin in our body: the first called ‘eumelanin’ which is primarily the black and brown pigments found in our skin and the second called ‘pheomelanin’ which provides the red and yellow pigments in our skin. The unique combination of these pigments provide us with the gorgeous tone of our skin. This pigment also determines how our skin reacts to UV rays- varying levels of melanin determine things such as if we burn or tan under direct sunlight for over a period of time. (Although it is an absolute myth that darker skin tones do not need SPF!) The reality is we all need SPF of at least factor 30 to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays which can lead to sun damage, skin aging or even skin cancer.
Our ethnicity can sometimes play a factor in the characteristics of our skin and how our skin presents hyperpigmentation, dark circles, acne, fine lines, and wrinkles. Although, it is important to understand that everyone is incredibly unique and that trying to assume and categorise individuals too simply would be a huge misstep. It can sometimes feel overwhelming to understand our skin and how to solve our skin concerns, but that is where Wǒ comes in to help ease some of that stress!
