Spring Clean, the KonMari Way
Spring is in the air, and with it comes a new sense of optimism. The change in the season is also the perfect time to declutter - from the inside out.
Along with wardrobes and homes, it’s also a chance to overhaul your skincare and make-up, for a new season. Doing so will help you feel refreshed, organised and the best version of yourself.
The minimal approach to living, as advocated by Marie Kondo (KonMari), is a trend we’re very much embracing at Wǒ. It feeds into our ethos for minimal packaging and minimal waste – small changes that make a big difference in our lives and the environment too.
So, let’s take a look at how we can all benefit from a touch of KonMari this spring…
Spring Declutter
Marie is a renowned organising consultant from Japan, famous for sparking joy through tidying. In her book, ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying’, she outlines how tidying can bring contentment and joy. If you haven’t already read this bestseller, here’s some of the key take-outs:
Use the Power of VisionWhether it’s a mood board, Pinterest or sketching’s, map out the vision you have for a clutter-free life. For instance, this might be a home with minimal décor and neutral colours. In doing so, you’re one step closer to making your new vision a reality.
Does it Spark Joy?A prerequisite for a minimal lifestyle is knowing the value of the items you own. According to Marie Kondo, if it doesn’t spark joy, then you don’t need it.
Pick up that face cream you’ve been hanging on to, find that eye serum you’ve hidden away, gather your cosmetic collection and look at them one by one. What feelings do they evoke? If something sparks joy, you will feel it. If there’s less of an emotional spark, then maybe it’s time to add it to the declutter pile. Do so with a sense of gratitude – it’s an important part of moving on.
This allows you to objectively review your collection, knowing what to keep and what to dispose of.
Learn to Say GoodbyeAn essential part of decluttering is getting rid of unnecessary items. It’s not just enough to organise your beauty bag, it’s also important to look at products you don’t use or don’t need anymore and find them a good home.
Body and MindMarie Kondo has clearly tapped into something deeper than tidying. Research has shown that there are numerous benefits to staying organised and taking clutter from our lives.
To summarise here’s a few take-out points to help declutter your beauty bag, the KonMari way:
- ‘Stock-take’ your beauty bag every season, to ensure it’s kept fresh - do this by looking at all your beauty products in one go, then all your skincare products, and so forth
- Throw away (or recycle if possible) items that no longer spark emotion, or that you no longer use
- Check your beauty products for their Period After Opening (PAO), so you can ensure you're using the products within their specified time. Doing this will ensure you keep any risk of spoilage to a minimum. Using product beyond the PAO could increase the risk of micro-organism growth and the possibility of adverse reactions.
- Be organised with your skincare products. Have your go-to favourites in one easy-to-reach location for quick access.
As for maintaining tidiness and an organised space, Wǒ are committed to minimising waste, we've considered this throughout the development of the brand and all will be revealed soon!
